Gen Z has reimagined Valentine’s: Galentine’s Day. Yes, you read that right, Galentine’s not Valentine’s. This modern holiday is an alternative to traditional norms of spending the day with a romantic partner.
Galentine’s Day is a global holiday that celebrates friendship and girlpower. It is typically celebrated on February 13, but can be hosted any day of the week of Valentine’s. Teen girls have especially taken to this celebration, hosting events embodying the same decor as Valentine’s, but focusing on friendship instead of romance.
Traditional Galentine’s celebrations are hosted at a house in the evening – usually leading to a sleepover.
Nalia Viau (11) hosted a Galentine’s Day event for the first time last year. She thinks the little details, like themed decorations, made her event special.
“Just like Christmas and Thanksgiving have decorations, I believe this holiday should be given the same effort,” said Viau.

Entertainment is also vital to a successful celebration. Leaning into the art side, painting canvases or cards can allow a friend group to tap into their creativity. Alternatively, if in the gift-giving mood, consider having an exchange such as the viral Jellycat exchange.

If interested in a more relaxing evening, a good Rom-Com never disappoints. Classic include “How To Lose a Guy In 10 Days”, “10 Things I Hate About You”, “Titanic”, and “The Notebook”.
Isabella Dorer (12) is the senior class’s resident Rom-Com expert. Her favorite movie of all time is “Never Been Kissed” featuring Drew Barrymore. Dorer thinks Rom-Coms elicit the best feelings of happiness and giddiness, which is why she believes they are perfect to watch on Galentine’s.
“It’s a perfect movie for Galentine’s events because there are tons of awkward moments to laugh about together and tons of lovey-dovey moments to geek out over,” said Dorer.
Another central aspect of the Rom-Com experience (other than a box of tissues and a comfy blanket) are good snacks. A way to take Galentine’s to the next level is by having themed foods and desserts. Many restaurants make Valentine’s-themed alterations to their classic menu items which can be used in a Galentine’s event as well. Chick-Fil-A makes heart-shaped chicken and brownie platters or everyone in the group can bring a board with different snacks and desserts.

Ever since Galentine’s Day was introduced in a “Parks and Recreation” episode by Amy Poehler and popularized through TikTok, it has become a fun-filled tradition among friend groups. Although such an event can seem stressful, spending Galentine’s Day with close friends is worth the planning.
