The 2022-2023 season for the Girl’s Varsity Volleyball Team has been both exciting and entertaining for everyone involved. So far, the Lady Bulldogs have won their first two games against Archbishop Coleman Carroll and Florida Christian High School. Anyone who attended the Florida Christian game can attest to being on the edge of their seats. With a massive turnout from both schools leading to battles between student spectators and intense rallies, this game was a predecessor to the rest of the team’s thrilling season.

Although they have suffered losses this season, like their game against Miami Palmetto Senior High School and Southwest Miami Senior High School, our Lady Bulldogs have pushed through until the end. The girls’ perseverance led them to a big win in Orlando, earning them third place. With the season coming to an end, the team is excited to finish strong at the district championships.

Sydney Zanca, a sophomore with an unstoppable swing, is one of your Lady Bulldogs to get to know. Diaz says that Zanca and Rayna Anders (12) are some of the most potent offensive players on the team. Last year, the All-Dade 4A-2A First Team featured Anders in the Miami Herald. She has consistently proven to be an impressive player. In addition, the team’s libero, Ana Sofia Mascarua Fuentes (12), has had a fantastic season with great digs and serves. She has moved up to the starter and is a valuable team member.

All in all, the Girl’s Varsity Volleyball Team was able to make it to regionals, where they competed against one of their strongest opponents: Westminster Christian School. Even though they lost 25-21 in the last set, the girls played an impressive game.

With the season closing, Riviera is losing seven beloved seniors: Rayna Anders, Sofia Bobe, Olivia Gang, Ana Sofia Mascarua, Isabel Mascarua, Sarah Pachon, and Alexandra Ragan. All these girls have played an essential role on the team, and although we are sad to see them go, we know they will do great things after Riviera.
